5.5 earthquake hits Plumas County felt by Sacramento residents

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake, centered in Plumas County, Northern California, struck Thursday afternoon — knocking some things off shelves and rattling nerves.

The quake struck at 4:19 p.m. and was followed by a swarm of smaller quakes, many of them registering above magnitude 2.5 and 3.8. The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was in Lake Amador.

“It was raging,” said Darren Gilbert, a worker at Lake Almadour Ice Hardware, adding that the shaking lasted about 10 seconds. “The building started shaking—things started falling off the shelves. It was nice to feel, but it probably wouldn’t have been so great if things were smashed.”

At the Timber House Restaurant, Brewery and Lodge in Chester, manager Marissa Hayes described minor damage to the establishment’s floor.

“There were five-inch nails shaking and bouncing off the floor in the restaurant,” Hayes said. “Other than that, there was no harm, thank God.”

The earthquake knocked out the CHP’s Chikou 911 transmission lines, which receive emergency cell phone calls.

The shaking was felt as far as Sacramento, 115 miles south of the epicenter. People there received alerts on their cell phones 39 seconds before the shaking started warning them that a magnitude 6.4 earthquake was about to strike.

Grass Valley residents also received an alert, 18.3 seconds early, and in Redding, residents were given 19 seconds to prepare themselves via the state’s ShakeAlert earthquake warning system.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Aftershocks were also reported, with a magnitude exceeding 2.5, with the largest recorded at 2.8.

Israel Lopez, who works at Inter Mountain Hardware in Ayoub in Chester, said the quake was brief and there was little damage other than some items in the store that fell off shelves.

“It was very short, 10 to 15 seconds,” Lopez said. “It wasn’t too crazy.”
