A 5.5-magnitude earthquake in Northern California interrupts the 911 transmission line

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake in Northern California has hit California Highway Patrol’s 911 transmission line.

The quake occurred at 4:19 p.m. Pacific Time Thursday in the Lake Almanor resort area in the Sierra Nevada.

“The 5.5-magnitude earthquake in Plumas County has disrupted CHP Chico Dispatch’s 911 cell phone lines and are now out of order,” the agency’s Yuba-Sutter area office said.

“If you can’t get to 911 through the cell, call 530-332-1200. They’re working on it,” she said.

On Friday, CHP Chico Dispatch wrote on Facebook that the 911 phone lines are back up and running.

“On May 11, 2023, at approximately 4:17 p.m., Northern California was hit by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake near Chester, California. As a result, CHP Chico Dispatch 911 lost a mobile phone line for approximately 5 minutes,” the company said. “During this downtime, calls were automatically forwarded to CHP Sacramento Dispatch. The 911 cell phone lines are currently up and running.”

California’s Office of Emergency Services warned Thursday night that residents should prepare for aftershocks and that a 5.2-magnitude aftershock occurred at 3:18 a.m. PST Friday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS tweeted that alerts had been delivered to cellphones for those who could feel intensity 3 or greater, though one woman tweeted that she felt more than that and received no alert.

People reported feeling the earthquake all the way to Sacramento, which is about 160 miles away.

California earthquakes shake and awaken nearby residents

The magnitude 5.5 quake was the largest in California since the magnitude 7.1 Ridgecrest sequence in 2019, according to a tweet from Lucy Jones, a former USGS seismologist.

Only minor damage was reported immediately from the earthquakes.

“A lot of broken glass, a lot of broken dishes, a lot of broken liquor from upstairs,” Stephanie Hughes, the restaurant’s manager, told ABC 10.

“Everything was shaking,” Hughes said. “The agents were fleeing into the garden.”

Pictures circulated on social media showed dishes and bottles strewn on the floor at Plumas Pines Resort and Bar in Al Manor.

“Due to the recent earthquake and the loss and damage to our restaurant, we will be closed tonight and tomorrow morning. We will reassess the rest of the weekend after we are able to clean up and determine what we really missed!” He said on Friday.

The Sun reported Friday that a Plumas County official indicated there was no major or structural damage, and that a representative for Pacific Gas & Electric said the facility would conduct inspections of its facilities.
