A spokeswoman for Healesville Sanctuary confirmed that there were “no reports of any animal or human disturbance” after the quake, while the employees working for the Puffing Billy Railroad did not feel the quake.

Jonathan Griffin, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia, said the majority of the reports had come from Croydon and Fearntree Gully. Listeners to 3AW said the quake was felt in places like Sunshine in the city’s west.

Compared to the 5.9-magnitude quake that was felt in southeastern Australia and caused partial collapse of buildings on Chapel Street in September 2021, Griffin said, Tuesday’s quake was much shallower.

“Although the size and distance between you makes a difference, it can also depend on the type of ground through which the shaking propagates. If you are on a soft sediment near the bottom of a river…it can amplify the ground shaking.

“Also, if you were out running, you might not have felt it at all. But if you were at home sitting on the couch watching TV, you might have noticed.”

Pascal noted that it was not surprising to see earthquake activity near the Dandenong Range, as it was a particularly hilly and mountainous part of Melbourne, at the tip of the Great Dividing Range.

He said his organization recorded an average of about 30 to 40 earthquakes a week, with one or two earthquakes occurring in urban areas, but these were usually too small to be felt.

“When you see hills and mountains in that area, they were formed over millions of years by seismic activity, so this is just one small earthquake in a chain of thousands,” Pascal said.
