Connecticut – There was a slight earthquake in the area overnight, but most of us slept through the quake, although people as far away as New Jersey reported hearing a “thump” before feeling a slight rumble.

According to preliminary data from the USGS, the 2.2-magnitude earthquake occurred around 2 am about 2 kilometers south of Hastings-on-Hudson at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

The source of the strange noise and bang caused some confusion early in the morning. Soon after the event, residents took to social media looking for answers. Most of those who reported feeling a slight tremor were already awake at the time, but some reported that a large “bang” brought them out of their slumber.

The last reported earthquake in our area was the 1.4 magnitude earthquake that rocked Kos Cob in January last year.

According to the USGS, earthquakes in the central and eastern United States, although less frequent than in the western United States, are usually felt over a much wider area. East of the Rocky Mountains, an earthquake can be felt over an area ten times larger than a similar quake on the West Coast.

Most often when Connecticut experiences an earthquake, underground faults in the central part of the state near Modus in East Haddam can be blamed.
