Another powerful earthquake rocks the Pacific Ocean, generating tsunami forecasts

Although there is no threat of a tsunami at the Pacific level, the tsunami is expected to affect areas within 300 km from the epicenter of tonight’s earthquake.

For the second time in as many days, a powerful earthquake rocked the Pacific Ocean near the Loyalty Islands, triggering tsunami bulletins from various government agencies around the world. According to the USGS, an earthquake with an initial magnitude of 7.4 occurred but later decreased to a magnitude of 7.1 at 3:51 PM Hawaiian Time or 6:51 PM Pacific Time. The region was hit by a series of powerful earthquakes; According to the USGS, there have been 45 earthquakes in just the past 24 hours here, most of them measuring 5.1 or greater. These earthquakes come on top of a magnitude 7.7 event that struck yesterday evening.

The National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Honolulu, Hawaii warns of a possible tsunami on some coasts. Specifically, Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna can see tsunamis from this earthquake. “Actual amplitudes on the coast may differ from projected amplitudes due to uncertainties in forecasts and local features. In particular, maximum tsunami amplitudes on atolls and in marginal barrier reef sites are likely to be much smaller than projections indicate,” warns the PTWC.

While the PTWC is warning of a possible tsunami from this powerful earthquake, it is also quick to issue bulletins that Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington are not in a tsunami risk area from this specific seismic event.

There is a risk of a tsunami in parts of the Pacific Ocean located near the earthquake. However, based on all available data, there is no risk of a tsunami occurring in Hawaii,” PTWC wrote in a bulletin issued to Hawaii.

The National Weather Service’s National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska issued a bulletin similar to those in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Canada’s British Columbia coast. “Based on earthquake information and historical tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to cause a tsunami.”

Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. Deep in the ocean, tsunamis don’t get very high. But as the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher elevations as the ocean depth decreases. According to the National Ocean Service, the speed of tsunamis depends on the depth of the ocean rather than the distance from the wave source. Tsunamis may travel at the same speed as jet planes over deep water, slowing only when they reach shallow water. While tsunamis are often referred to as tidal waves, this name is discouraged by oceanographers because tides have nothing to do with these giant waves.
