A Villa goal in stoppage time puts LAFC on the ground up 2-1

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Carlos Villa scored a penalty five minutes into stoppage time in the second half and Los Angeles FC tied for a 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

The win leaves defending champions LAFC (7-1-4) at the top of the Western Conference standings after the Seattle Sounders lost to the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0.

LAFC jumped out to the lead in the third minute of the game on a Stipe Biuk goal. Jose Cifuentes and Ryan Hollingshead assisted Buick’s second goal of the season.

San Jose (5-5-3) led until seven minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal from defender Miguel Traocco. It was the first goal of his career for Traucco, who has made 12 appearances over the past two seasons.

LAFC finished with advantages of 15-14 in shooting and 6-3 in shots on goal.

John McCarthy saved 2 shots for LAFC. JT Marcinkowski made five saves for San Jose.

The Earthquakes entered play with six wins in their last eight games with LAFC. San Jose was handed LAFC’s only loss of the season – 2-1 at home earlier this month.

The San Jose team is down to 1-18-8 on the road in all competitions since the start of last season.

LAFC has improved to 14-1-1 in its last 16 home games. LAFC settled for a 1-1 draw with D.C. United in their previous round.

San Jose returns home to host FC Dallas on Saturday. LAFC is down next week.
