“The People’s Alliance got the highest youth vote in the Turkish elections”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that Turkish youth mainly voted for the People’s Alliance in the crucial elections that took place last week.
“Contrary to what is claimed and believed, in the elections we received the greatest support from our youth,” Erdogan said at a meeting with 1,500 Turkish youth in the quake-hit district of Adiyaman.
Stating that he aims to start his first visit to the earthquake zone with the youth, the president added, “With the support and energy we receive from you, we will revisit our earthquake zone cities, Adiyaman, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya and Sivas.”
Erdogan also accused the opposition of inciting pessimism among the youth and said that the ruling Justice and Development Party, on the other hand, had been going hand in hand with the youth since the beginning.
“We have always worked to expand the vision of our youth with technology, sports, art and culture.”
He stressed that the government will bring large parts of the defense industry manufacturing sites to the region within this scope.
“For example, we are setting up a cable and connector production facility in Adıyaman and setting up a software campus.”
Speaking of education, Erdogan said that in the coming period, the AKP will expand alternative education opportunities and focus on raising the quality in a way that competes with the world.
“We have now become an attractive country for both citizens and individuals who grew up outside of Turkey, which was losing its educated people to other countries in the past,” Erdogan emphasized, hoping to shape the country with the youth in the future.
Similarly, Erdogan delivered important messages to young people on Saturday, calling on Turkey’s youth to head to the polls on May 28 for the presidential runoff elections.
Erdogan said that during the 21 years that the AKP has been in government, they have worked to protect the freedoms of young people.
In the statement, which he posted on Twitter, Erdogan urged the youth to “not pay heed to the lies of those who want to share with you their political failures and the bleak picture they are trying to paint.”
Erdogan noted that during the 21 years they were in government, “we have not interfered with the lifestyle of any (our youth), nor have we allowed anyone to interfere with other people’s clothes, way of thinking, expectations and tastes.”
He said, “In addition to the many works, investments and projects that we have presented to our country, we have worked hard so that you can express your ideas freely and live your youth freely and to the fullest.”
“We are taking firm steps towards our goals with 208 universities, 96 technical parks, 316 design centers and 1,249 research and development centers.
“With Teknofest, where more than a million young people compete, we have platforms where you can highlight your potential and compete with the world. Moreover, thanks to our national technology move, we have become a country that not only consumes technology, but also designs, develops and produces it.”
Speeches about earthquake victims
On the contrary, the President also spoke of the negative sentiments and insults directed at the earthquake victims by opposition voters.
Supporters of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) led by the Nation Alliance sent insulting and threatening messages targeting voters in the quake-hit provinces for voting for Erdoğan. Some said the earthquake survivors who voted for the ruling party should have died in the deadly earthquake on February 6.
“I hope that May 28 will be the first response to the immoral people who insulted the earthquake victims,” Erdogan said.
Nine out of the 11 provinces hit by the deadly disaster voted in favor of the AKP. The head of the opposition Republican People’s Party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, received 71% of the vote in Diyarbakir and 48.1% in Hatay province.
Erdogan also plans to visit Hatay province on Sunday to participate in the opening of Defne State Hospital – a 300-bed hospital whose foundations were laid on March 24 after devastating earthquakes. The hospitalization was completed in 60 days.
Twin earthquakes on February 6 hit 11 provinces, killing more than 50,000 people. They have toppled hundreds of thousands of buildings and destroyed the infrastructure of the region.
Erdogan’s People’s Alliance has won a majority in Parliament, and the presidential race heads into a second round on May 28.
No candidate won an absolute majority in the first round held on May 14, although Erdoğan was ahead. He will face Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and joint candidate of the six-party opposition Nation Alliance, in a run-off.
