Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hailed his party’s victory in the parliamentary elections as a “political earthquake” after the conservatives scored a landslide victory but failed to form a majority.
With most of the votes counted after Sunday’s election, the ruling New Democracy party has a commanding lead with 40.8 percent of the vote, while the previous ruling party, Syriza, trails with 20.1 percent in Greece’s 300-seat parliament. .
However, Mitsukaise’s party has failed to achieve the majority required to form a government on its own, with the fate of the new government still hanging in limbo.
According to projections by the Greek Ministry of the Interior, New Democracy is expected to win 145 seats in parliament, six shy of an absolute majority.
From Monday, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou will give the top three parties – New Democracy, Syriza and Socialist PASOK – three days each to try to form a coalition government.
If all three parties fail, Sakellaropoulou will appoint a transitional government to prepare for new elections, which will take place about a month later.
Without Mitsotakis, the numbers of potential alliances do not stack up, as SYRIZA has 72 seats, PASOK has 41 seats, the Communist Party KKE has 26 seats, and the right-wing Hellenic Solution Party has 16 seats.
KKE has already announced that it will not participate in any coalition, while the Greek Solution Party has criticized both New Democracy and Syriza.
Mitsotakis, who served as prime minister and leader of New Democracy, has expressed his desire for a strong one-party government, but believes the election results provide a clear mandate.
Addressing supporters outside the party’s headquarters in Athens, Mitsotakis described his party’s victory as a “political earthquake”.
“The results of the ballot are decisive. They show that the new democracy has the consent of the people to govern, is strong and independent.”
This victory for Mitsotakis is very important, as his administration has faced many challenges, including a wiretapping scandal, the Covid-19 pandemic, a cost-of-living crisis, and a fatal train crash that has sparked public outrage.
However, it comes as a major setback for Syriza and its leader Alexis Tsipras, who rose to power in 2015 on the back of a wave of public discontent with the other parties’ handling of a debt crisis that has severely affected Greece’s economy for more than a decade.
The MeRA25 movement, led by former Syriza Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, failed to secure any seats in parliament.
Tsipras, who congratulated Mitsotakis on his victory, indicated that the race was not over and spoke of the possibility of a second election.
“Battles are victories and losses,” he said. “The electoral cycle is not over yet… It is very likely that there will be a second election.”

Greece faced the threat of exiting the eurozone during the height of its debt crisis in 2015, which led to its acceptance of a third bailout under Tsipras.
Mitsotakis, who was elected in 2019, has focused his campaign on improving the financial conditions of the Greek people, promising to raise wages and pensions that were cut during the crisis.
Panos Koliastasis, associate associate professor of politics at the University of Peloponnese, attributed Mitsotakis’ victory to his focus on addressing financial concerns and his clear proposal for an independent government.
“He also had a clear proposal about (how) he would be in power – that is, an independent government,” he said.
“Syriza’s alternative, forming a coalition government, was not that realistic because the others refused to cooperate.”
Elections are held in Greece every four years to determine the composition of the 300-seat parliament.
