An earthquake was reported in North Carolina, the third one this month

The USGS says the 2.6-magnitude quake occurred on Tuesday at about 7:30 p.m.

Haywood County, North Carolina – An earthquake was reported in the mountainous western region of North Carolina on Tuesday.

A 2.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in Haywood County, west of Asheville, on Tuesday around 7:30 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The US Geological Survey estimates that the earthquake had a depth of 1.1 km.

There were no reports of injuries or damages caused by the earthquake at this time.

This is the third earthquake in North Carolina this month. On May 12, a 2.1-magnitude earthquake was reported in Bienville, and on May 14, a 1.9-magnitude earthquake was reported in Cherokee County near the NC-Tennessee state line, according to the USGS.

While the cause of this earthquake is not officially known, earthquakes can be caused by moving plates within the Earth.

“Eventually, it gets to the point where the physical rock can’t take it anymore. And as a result, it fails,” Scott Howard, a South Carolina geologist, told meteorologist KJ Jacobs formerly of WCNC Charlotte Weather IQ.

Other earthquakes are caused by humans. They are known as induced earthquakes and can be the result of tunnel construction and fracking projects.
