Tips for preparing for an earthquake

Lexington, Kentucky (and Kent) – A 2.8-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Kentucky and Tennessee over the weekend.

UK seismologists say earthquakes in our part of the state are not uncommon.

Here’s how you can prepare.

“Earthquakes are not uncommon in the eastern part of the state,” said seismologist Dr. Seth Carpenter.

Especially in southeastern Kentucky, which is located in an earthquake zone called the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone.

“This area continues all the way down to Alabama,” said Dr. Carpenter.

We found out that this seismic zone actually extends as far north as southeastern Kentucky in 2012. That’s when a magnitude 4.2 earthquake rocked Perry County.

“The region experiences earthquakes of magnitude 1 to 2 or more every ten years,” said Dr. Carpenter.

So, how strong was a magnitude 4 earthquake?

“In terms of magnitudes, a magnitude 4 is not the largest earthquake, but it has the potential to cause damage,” said Dr. Carpenter.

Which means you need to be prepared.

“Try to get out of a building, if possible. If that’s not possible, sit under a sturdy table and hold on to your foot,” Dr. Carpenter said.

There are 24 seismographs across the state of Kentucky. Here in the eastern part of the state, there are six.

Scientists at the University of Kentucky on Thursday were presenting research on geological hazards in the state at the Kentucky Geological Survey’s annual symposium.
