Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes off Batanes

MANILA, Philippines — A 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded off Batanes Thursday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (VIVOLX).

The quake was detected at 9:48 p.m., and the epicenter was tracked about 33 kilometers northeast of the town of Apyatayat.

The quake was tectonic in origin and the depth of the epicenter was 15 kilometers, Vivolks said in an updated earthquake bulletin.

The bulletin also indicated that intensity III or weak vibrations were felt in the area of ​​Atbiat, Batanes. Intensity II or vibrations felt little in Basco, Mahatao, and Batanes; and Intensity I or the imperceptible vibrations in Ivana, Batanes

Seismologists in the state said no damage was expected from the quake, but warned of aftershocks.
