Wow, did Melbourne have an earthquake last night? I haven’t heard about it on every social media platform ever…

Well, put your seismographs on and grab your memoirs (shoot me now) because we’ve rounded up everyone’s best efforts to conjure up a funny gag while we’re still reeling from one of the biggest shakes to hit town since Boost Juice launched its protein smoothies.

First is a category I like to call “everyone pulls the same joke as Betty’s Burgers but with very slight differences.”

For example, when Melbourne was hit by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in September 2021, Betty Burger in South Yarra had it badly chipped and the front facades basically destroyed.

The good news was that this was pretty much the extent of the massive damage done to the city, which prevented a few bruisers from realizing that our city was not the perfect, majestic jewel in the Australian cultural crown that we all thought it was.

Fast forward to May 2023 and Betty’s Burgers is the butt of the joke again (read: bun).

This next batch of memes I like to call “possum, possum, possum” are, you guessed it, people joking that they thought earthquake was actually property rolling across their roofs.

After I saw the first tweet mentioning this phenomenon, I laughed. Why Lying? I am just a human.

But then I saw the second, third, fourth, and fifth (slight fall and major lift), and concluded that the people of Melbourne are really a hive mind, incapable of original thinking.

All we do is drink a soy latte, eat potato chips, experience the occasional earthquake, wear black clothes and joke about a possum. It’s a lifestyle.
