Seventy-sixth World Health Assembly – Daily Update: 30 May 2023
The 76th WHO Health Assembly closed today, having addressed a wide range of issues, including behavioral sciences; best buys for non-communicable diseases; diagnostic; disability; prevention of drowning; emergency, critical and operative care; dietary micronutrients; indigenous health; infection prevention and control; mother and child health; medical oxygen; primary health care; health of refugees and migrants; rehabilitation; traditional medicine and WHO’s work in responding to dozens of emergencies while working with member states to better prepare them to face new ones.
Earlier in the day, delegates in Committee A agreed to apply the knowledge a roadmap to the Global Initiative for Health and Peace (along with a slight name change from “Global Health for Peace Initiative”) and requested that the Director-General report on progress in strengthening the roadmap.
At the plenary session, as the final step of the assembly’s adoption, the delegates adopted the resolutions and decisions of the two committees, and adopted their reports. This included the approval of the 2024-2025 budget. and a 20% increase in assessed contributions. Committee presidents and representatives of the two regions spoke to recognize the work and progress of this Assembly.
In his Final remarks, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, noted that “the increase in assessed contributions and the investment round are historic and a major milestone.” He spoke about the year ahead, with high-level meetings on universal health coverage, tuberculosis and pandemic preparedness and response at this year’s UN General Assembly. He pointed to the continuation of negotiations on the agreement on the pandemic and amendments to the International Health Regulations as unprecedented – “generational” – opportunities to learn from the mistakes of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure that they are not repeated.
Delegates also had the opportunity to hear from former WHO staff member Gwen Carnelley, who turned 100 this year, and who started working with WHO in 1949, just a year after WHO was founded 75 years ago.
