A survivor of the 2005 earthquake arrives in Balakot in search of his family – Pakistan

Mansehra: A young man, who disappeared in the 2005 earthquake when he was a child, returned to Balakot on Sunday in search of his family.

He called the police to help trace his family, whom he claimed went missing after the school where he studied collapsed in the devastating earthquake.

“I was in my class when earthquakes rocked Balakot and my school building collapsed. I was among those students and teachers, who survived the tragedy even though we had injuries,” Ijaz Ahmed, who is in his early 20s, told Balakot police.

He said he was taken to Rawalpindi for treatment, but some unknown people “kidnapped” him and sold him to people associated with brick kilns in Punjab.

Ahmed said, “I was sold four times in different cities and worked as a forced laborer in brick kilns.”

He told police he was in the third grade when the tragedy occurred. He said that people used to call his father, Muhammad Anwar, and his mother, Naseem Akhtar.

A large number of people rushed to the Balakot police station after learning that a young man, who disappeared around 18 years ago when he was a schoolboy, was searching for his family. Fortunately, Muhammad Anwar was also among them.

He hugged his son and almost cried with joy, tears streaming down his cheeks. He said the family used to call Ahmed as Zaid. He said that the third grader was lost in the quake.

However, SHO Balakot Police Station Tariq Khan said his department will get DNA tests on Ahmed and Anwar to ascertain if they are really father and son.
