The magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Grand Anse department, after heavy rains displaced more than 13,000 people.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life, the destruction of property and the suffering of the Haitian people caused by the earthquake,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric. “The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured.”

The World Food Program said on Monday it was already providing immediate assistance to those affected by the heavy rains over the weekend, providing hot meals to the displaced and mobilizing ready-to-eat rations and dry food.

Mr. Dujarric said that Grande-Anse was among the areas affected by the rains before the quake.

According to news reports, Tuesday’s earthquake was the second to hit the region in just two days, as a 4.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded on Sunday morning.

In August 2021, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the same area of ​​the Southern Peninsula, killing hundreds.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, is working with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Program and the International Organization for Migration, to support communities around the capital Port-au-Prince that have been hit hard by floods and landslides, he added.
