5.5-magnitude earthquake hits Haiti | Caribbean

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Haiti early Tuesday morning causing panic and damage to some buildings near Apricot in Grand Anse department.

The Haitian Civil Protection said the epicenter was at 18.68 degrees north latitude and 74.32 degrees west longitude, 4 kilometers (km) northwest of Abrico, 23 km northwest of Jérémy, and 180 km northwest of Léogane (west). department) and 210 km west of Port-au-Prince with a depth of 10 km.

It said that although there were no reports of loss of life, several buildings were damaged in Jeremy and St Helens and that the earthquake had caused panic among residents.

Tuesday’s earthquake followed Sunday’s 4.2-magnitude quake in the same area.

Haiti’s most powerful earthquake occurred in 2021 when a 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook the French-speaking country of Caricom killing more than 2,240 people.
