Two earthquakes were detected near Mount Hood on Tuesday afternoon

Two earthquakes of magnitude 2.6 and 3.0 struck near Mount Hood Tuesday afternoon. They happened about a mile down the mountain, very close to each other.

Mount Hood, Oregon — Two earthquakes struck about a mile southwest of Mount Hood on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Pacific Northwest Earthquake Network (PNSN).

The first, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake, was detected at 2:35 p.m. 46 miles east-southeast of Portland. The depth of the earthquake was about 0.82 miles.

The second quake, with a magnitude of 2.6, occurred at 2:36 p.m., about 46 miles east-southeast of Portland. The depth of this earthquake was about 1.88 miles.

The Tuesday afternoon quake occurred within miles of each other, according to a PNSN map showing recent quakes.

“It’s not really that strange if you think about it and remember that we live in a very seismically active area of ​​the world,” said Matt Zavino, KGW meteorologist. “But there is no sign that this is a sign of something bigger to come.”

Some KGW viewers sent in a notice that they felt the earthquakes. PNSN is currently collecting reports from people who may have felt at least one of the earthquakes.

A social media user commented under a post about the quake from the PNSN Twitter account, asking if the quake could have been the result of seasonal meltwater recharge.

PNSN responded to the user saying “There have been a number of magnitude 3 earthquakes in the area historically, and there is no clear bias towards them occurring in the spring (when seasonal meltwater is higher). We don’t know for sure, but I think it’s unlikely.”

KGW spoke to the University of Washington’s PNSN director, senior researcher Renate Hartog, regarding the activity and pattern of recent earthquakes.

“It’s not normal to have that magnitude of 3.0 or greater. But we had one almost exactly two years ago in June 2021 at 3.9 degrees a little farther south and a little farther east,” Hartog said. “We had another quake several decades ago in 2002, about 20 years ago, with a magnitude of 4.5 — a slightly different location than the current one. It’s not entirely unusual on Mount Hood to get some earthquakes.”

As for the reason behind earthquakes, Hartog said there could be a number of causes but it’s hard to pinpoint the exact cause.

“Mount Hood sits on top of what we call a fault system,” Hartog said. “Some of the earthquakes there probably have something to do with faults moving a little bit. We don’t necessarily know exactly what causes these earthquakes.”
