Drying Salton Sea may delay ‘big’ earthquake

Drying Salton Sea may delay ‘big’ earthquake

New research published today in the journal Nature finds that the “Big One” earthquake may be delayed in part by the recent dry conditions of the Salton Sea in Southern California. Over the past 1,000 years, major earthquakes in the area have been associated with the times when the waters of the Colorado River formed prehistoric Lake Cahuilla. Using computer modeling, researchers at San Diego State University and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, found that the weight of the ancient lake bent the crust beneath it, causing pressure along a fault that could trigger a large earthquake. It has now been more than 300 years since the last major earthquake along the San Andreas Fault, which is the longest time that there has been no earthquake in the past millennium. Researchers say this may be partly due to the Salton Sea’s dry conditions in recent years. The longer an area goes without an earthquake, the greater the stress — boosting the potential for a major rupture. Joining us to discuss his research is Matt Weingarten, co-author of the study and assistant professor of geosciences at San Diego State University.

LA think about crowding and pricing – how will it work?

London, Stockholm, Beijing – these cities among others have successfully implemented congestion pricing, a strategy that charged drivers during peak hours in an effort to reduce traffic. The same approach may soon be rolling out in Los Angeles. A long-awaited study looking at the effects of congestion pricing will be published later this summer by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Authority. The plan will identify specific high-traffic areas where congestion pricing can be most effective, which includes Interstate 10 between downtown and Santa Monica and areas between West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. Critics of congestion pricing say it will disproportionately affect low-income drivers. In general, charging Angelenos to drive on streets that have always been free will be difficult.

Joining us today on AirTalk are Mark Valianatos, Executive Officer of Innovation for the Los Angeles Metro, Siva Rudinansky, Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy at Occidental College, and Kumi Agis, Executive Director at the Association of Southern California Governments), a regional planning organization that conducts congestion pricing studies.

Rethinking the “War on Cancer” and our cultural dictionary of illnesses and diseases

Rethinking the “War on Cancer” and our cultural dictionary of illnesses and diseases

Battle jargon has long been an integral part of our discourse on illness and disease. Famously President Nixon declared “War on Cancer” in 1971, it is common for patients and their families to decide to “fight” for survival. But some say this is an overly combative way of describing the disease, ignoring the reality of patients’ mentalities and the limitations of their bodies. One 2019 study found that patients who were exposed to combative language about their illnesses had more fearful and murderous attitudes toward it, and may have been discouraged from taking preventive measures. Joining us today on AirTalk is Dr. Sunita Puri, director of the Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship Program at the University of Massachusetts, to discuss how language can influence the ways we understand our bodies and even our own mortality.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
