The Global Tourism Resilience Center supports Haiti after the earthquake

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck southern Haiti today, leaving 4 dead and 36 injured in its wake.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, the Global Tourism and Crisis Resilience Center (GTRCMC) announced its readiness to support the country’s recovery. The quake comes nearly two years after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Haiti, killing more than 2,000 people.

GTRCMC Co-Chair and Jamaican Minister of Tourism, Mr. Edmund Bartlett, while participating in the Caribbean Tourism Organization Caribbean Week in New York, said:

“GTRCMC stands ready to provide support to the people of Haiti who continue to face these kinds of unrest which in many cases have caused devastation to life and infrastructure.”

“The volatility of the situation forced many to relocate and created a level of uncertainty and fear,” he added.

Tuesday’s quake also comes as Haiti struggles to recover from heavy flooding over the weekend that killed at least 51 people, injured 140 and submerged nearly 31,600 homes.

“We will discuss support strategies with some of the global stakeholders who have the knowledge and experience with recovery efforts of this nature to formulate an action plan,” added GTRCMC Co-Chair and Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett.

“This tragic event is another reminder of the need for more flexibility so that countries can better plan and mitigate these disruptions,” said GTRCMC Executive Director, Professor Lloyd Waller.

The need to create a global tourism resilience initiative was one of the key outcomes of the Global Conference on Jobs and Inclusive Growth: Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism under the esteemed partnership of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Government of Jamaica, the World Bank Group and the Inter-American Development Bank.
