Volcanic earthquake monitored, rock fall in Mayon-Vivoulx area

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Saturday that 59 volcanic earthquakes and rock events were detected at Mayon Volcano in the past 24 hours.

In his 5 a.m. update, Vivoleks said rockfall events have spawned pyroclastic debris in the south and southeast canyons about 1,500 meters from the summit crater.

Philvocs said a “serious” eruption is likely within weeks or even days since Mayon is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma forms at its crater.

Vivoleks said the glow of a crater or “panag” and glowing rocks from the fresh lava can be seen at Mayon’s summit.

Vivoleks said Alert Level 3 remains in place and advised civil aviation authorities to avoid flying near the summit of the volcano as ash from any sudden eruption could be hazardous to aircraft.

Based on the current prevailing wind pattern, the Ashfall event is likely to occur on the south side of the volcano.

Meanwhile, Taal volcano remains below Alert Level 1 with a low level of unrest.
