Card players from three provinces are raising more than 6,000 euros for earthquake victims

Card players from three counties were present to hand over a check for more than €6,000 to Oxfam recently in Drum, the proceeds from the card game to help earthquake victims.

25 card players from three counties gathered at Drum Community Hall, Summerhill, Athlone on Easter Monday (10 April) to raise money for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

The card campaign was jointly organized by Progress 25 groups from Johnstown (Roscommon – Vinnie Brady coordinator), Curraghboy (Roscommon – Seamus McHugh coordinator), Ballinahown (Westmeath – Kathleen Finnan coordinator), Rosemount (Westmeath – Simon Boland coordinator) and Belmont ( Offaly) Francis Boylan). The event was a huge success with 27 tables and 162 players participating. In addition to the prizes for the event itself, there was a wide range of spot prizes donated by local businesses and individuals.

A check for €6,372 was presented to Oxfam Ireland’s Mark Millett at the Progress 25 match in Johnstown on 5 June. Mr. Millett gave a very interesting talk to the group, explaining the plight of the poorest earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey. He explained that all the money would go directly to the earthquake victims, and described how the money would be used to restore water services and provide necessities to the earthquake victims.

The organizers would like to thank the members of the 25 Progressive Groups, all the businesses and individuals who donated to the appeal and who provided instant prizes for tonight. They would also like to thank Sarah Seery, Maureen Duffy and Father Tom Bardon who sold tickets for the event but were unable to attend the presentation. Plus, a huge thanks to the people who volunteered on the night to help with the event.
