WHO Director-General pays tribute to Spanish victims and leadership to counter COVID-19
World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus joined the Spanish leadership in honoring those who lost their lives in the country because of COVID-19, welcoming the heroic efforts of health workers and praising the government’s determined and strong response to reverse the virus transmission.
“I respectfully join the King of Spain, the Prime Minister and the entire government of the country to pay tribute to the people who have fallen victim to COVID-19,” Dr. Tedros said. “I express my deepest condolences to the families of all the people who lost their lives to this virus in Spain and around the world.”
At one point, Spain was among the countries hit hardest by COVID-19. At the height of the epidemic, close to 10,000 new cases were reported in one day in Spain. Since then, intensive efforts, led by tight surveillance, interrogation, contact search, treatment, and isolation, have managed to suppress transmission.
Dr Tedros said the change was due to the Spanish leadership and the strong determination of the Spanish public to adhere to strict restrictions, including locks, physical distancing and other critical measures to limit transmission.
