Türkiye – Unmet need for contraceptives quadrupled in earthquake-affected parts of Turkey

The Association of Public Health Professionals (HASUDER), a local IPPF member association in Turkey, is the sole contraceptive provider in some camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) after the devastating 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and displaced millions.

Professor Bulent Kilic, Head of HASUDER, said that while government services are mandated to deliver contraceptive supplies to health clinics within IDP camps, services have generally focused on pregnancy and childbirth services. He said, “Doctors offering contraceptives, including the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD), are scarce or completely absent. There is no awareness about this gap in service.” Kelesh also describes serious hygiene problems facing women in the camps, where basic needs such as clean toilets and showers are not being met.

And Kilish continued, “We have seen that contraceptive services are only provided in gynecological clinics in hospitals, and even then they are provided very little and only on demand. This case is about the government’s perspective on women and women’s rights.”

The Reproductive Health Unit of Hasuder, which was established with the support of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the municipality of Hatay in Lyons and the tent city of the municipality of Mersin in Hatay, has been providing sexual and reproductive health services to 3,000 people since March 2023. These services include maternal and newborn care, contraceptive care, care Safe abortion, and counseling on sexual and gender-based violence. Hasoder provides contraception including intrauterine devices, oral contraceptives and condoms, but notes that underwear, sanitary pads, birth control pills, emergency contraception, and condoms are still among the items women need most.

Hasuder has also reported a rise in unplanned pregnancies due to the scarcity of available contraceptives. Violence against women and girls – already a serious problem in Turkey – worsens in every humanitarian emergency, and continues in IDP camps.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation estimates that 3.9 million women of childbearing age, more than 175,000 pregnant women, and more than 1.2 million adolescent girls (ages 10-19) have been affected by the earthquakes in Turkey. We expect that more than 8,700 women who are currently pregnant will experience complications from childbirth.
