LRT and MRT lines resume operations after 6.2-magnitude earthquake; The passenger information record (PNR) is still pending

MANILA, Philippines — All major train lines in the National Capital Region have suspended operations Thursday morning after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck various parts of Luzon for the purposes of safety inspections within the various rail systems.

State seismologists from Vivolex earlier reported that the quake occurred at approximately 10:19 am four kilometers southwest of Calatagan, Batangas. Damage and aftershocks are currently expected.

Among those that stopped were Light Rail Transit Line 1 and 2, Metro Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Philippine National Railways (PNR). Lines LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3 have since resumed operations.

There were no reports of any injuries among [MRT-3] Passengers. A full systems check is ongoing and operations will resume once our technical staff has verified that we are able to do so safely, Georgette Aquino, MRT-3’s commanding officer, said in a statement.

“All trains with passengers on board have been safely anchored to the station platforms, as of 10:43 a.m..”

The command center had earlier asked all trains within the aforementioned line to stop at their nearest stations after people felt the earthquake at North Avenue station.

Aquino says all passengers have been safely transferred to the platforms and have been advised regarding temporary inspections to make room for the “mandatory systems check” inside MRT-3.

“We would like to thank all passengers for their understanding and cooperation which ultimately led to the resumption of MRT-3 operations,” Aquino continued in the Philippines. About 14 trains are currently operating within the said revenue line.

A safety stop was also placed on the LRT-1 line at approximately 10:30 am from the Baclaran to Roosevelt stations.

LRT-2 and PNR lines have also issued similar statements regarding ongoing safety inspections within their facilities to ensure the safety of all passengers and rail officials.

Intensity IV (medium strength) was felt within Quezon City due to the said earthquake. Many of the above train lines pass through the aforementioned city.

NAIA runways and taxiways are closed

The runways and taxiways of Ninoy Aquino International Airport were also closed for inspection after the seismic activity.

“MIAA ground safety units are now doing a quick check to check for any damage to the docks. This is standard operating procedure to ensure safe landing and take-off of aircraft,” the DOTr continued.

At the same time, departures and arrivals within the stations will not be affected by the inspection, which is also carried out by the Authority’s station safety units.

The authorities are currently seeking public understanding of the potential impacts on flight schedules due to the runway closure.
