A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hits the northern Philippines

The Department of Transportation said operations of Manila’s three elevated railways had been halted due to the quake.

“Railway and airport operations have been suspended. So far there has been no news of the significant impact of the earthquake and we hope it will remain that way,” civil defense spokesman Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro told GMA news channel.

Ceiling lights were seen shaking in a hotel in one of Manila’s business districts where President Ferdinand Marcos Junior was speaking to reporters after attending an international business forum, according to a Reuters witness.

Peter Oliver Palacio, mayor of Calatagan, a town just 5 kilometers from the epicenter, told DZMM radio that the quake was amazing, and added that the town’s engineering department had been instructed to check for damage.

The seismological agency initially recorded a magnitude 6.2 earthquake, but later revised it to a magnitude of 6.3. She said she expected damage and aftershocks.
