On May 14, Thailand held general elections. The results came as a shock to the Thai political system.

Since the 2014 coup, Thai politics have been dominated by military leaders. One of the main opposition parties has challenged military rule, but has generally been thwarted at every turn. This year, however, a third party has triumphed – and his vision for the country marks a radically progressive shift in Thai politics.

The Move Forward party, led by charismatic Harvard and MIT-educated 42-year-old Beta Limgarronrat, won the election handily. And they did so by channeling the kind of progressive populism that could change Thailand’s domestic political culture and foreign policy in big ways.

On the podcast today is Prashanth Parameswaran, Fellow at the Wilson Center and founder of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Premier Newsletter. We begin by discussing the political context in which Moving Forward won this election. Then we have a lengthy conversation about how the military junta has rigged the Thai political system in such a way that the Move Forward party may not actually be able to put together a government – and even if they did, the threat of a coup would loom large.
