Thailand sends more than $757,000 to earthquake victims in S. Türkiye

Thailand donated more than $757,000 (Turkish lira 17.92 million) to the Turkish Red Crescent in the capital, Ankara, on Thursday to help victims of the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey on February 6, killing more than 50,000 people.

The donation ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Turkish Red Crescent, in the presence of the Thai Ambassador, Apirat Sugundabhirom.

This grant, in addition to the previous emergency aid of $300,000 sent by the Thai Red Cross Society, aims to provide immediate assistance and support to those affected by earthquakes.

With this latest donation, the Thai Red Cross Society has contributed a total of $787,347 to the Turkish Red Crescent Society.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sugundabhirom said that this gesture of friendship and support strengthens the long-standing partnership between the two organizations within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

As the recovery process continues in Turkey, he said, the Thai people stand in solidarity with the Turkish people, adding that “we are confident and hopeful that the steadfast Turkish people will rebuild and rise stronger than ever in the near future.”

The Royal Thai government extended a helping hand by providing an initial humanitarian aid of $150,000 to Turkey. Also, the Thai National Search and Rescue Team, consisting of 42 members and rescue dogs, embarked on a mission in Turkey’s southern Hatay province from February 10-17 in cooperation with Turkish agencies, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. and international search and rescue teams.

The Thai royal family also extended its support by arranging two special flights by the Royal Thai Air Force, to deliver vital humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

These flights carried substantial essential supplies, including tents, duvets, winter sleeping bags, power generators, dried foods, milk and drinking water, amounting to approximately 22.35 metric tons.

Thailand’s contributions and humanitarian aid efforts were honored by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who awarded Ambassador Sugndabhirum and Lerpong Suansang, Team Leader and Representative of the Urban Search and Rescue Team – Thailand, the Presidential Medal and Distinguished Humanitarian Service Medal Ceremony in late April.
