4.8 magnitude earthquake hits Bangladesh

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on June 16. The quake occurred at about 10:16 a.m., with a depth of 70 km. According to reports, the tremor of the earthquake was also felt in Assam and other parts of northeastern India.

In a tweet, the National Center of Seismology wrote, “Earthquake with magnitude: 4.8, occurred on 16-06-2023, 10:16:15 IST, Latitude: 24.86 and Longitude: 91.98, Depth: 70 km, Area: Bangladesh.”

There were no immediate reports of loss of life, injury or property damage

Meanwhile, on June 11, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit the central part of Assam. A report of the National Center for Seismology stated that the latest earthquake was recorded at 11:35 am and its epicenter was in the Sontpur district on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River. The exact location of the epicenter is about 150 km northeast of Guwahati, near the town of Tezpur in north-central Assam. The earthquake was felt in neighboring Darang, Lakhimpur and Udalgori districts, along with those in Morigaon, Nagaon and West Karbi Anglong on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River. Prior to that on May 29, a magnitude 4.4 had struck Sontpur in Assam.

The northeastern states are in the highly seismic zone, and the region is frequently hit by earthquakes.
