Strong aftershock in western France after a 5-magnitude earthquake

A strong aftershock was felt in western France in the early hours of the morning after a rare 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the region at 18:38 on Friday (June 16) evening.

The French seismological office described the quake as “very strong” amid reports of damage to buildings.

Transitional environment minister Christophe Picchu said the quake was “one of the strongest on record on the mainland”.

The national network of seismologists, Rinas, recorded the quake at 5.3 points, while the French Central Seismological Bureau (BCSF) put it at 5.8. Earthquakes greater than five magnitude are rare in France, and earthquakes were last recorded in the southeastern department of Drôme in 2019.

The aftershock was reported at Level 5 and felt strongly in the Deux-Sèvres department. Hit at about 4:30 today.
