8th earthquake reported in less than 4 weeks near Canton

Canton, North Carolina (WLOS) – Another earthquake has been reported near a small town in western North Carolina – the eighth in less than four weeks.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that a 2.1-magnitude earthquake struck 4 kilometers northwest of Canton at approximately 12:52 a.m. on Friday, June 16.

Insurance commissioner urges coverage after series of earthquakes in the Canton area

At a depth of about 0.2 km, only one person has so far responded to the USGS’ “Felt Report.”

This is the eighth earthquake to hit the Canton area since May 23.

Although western North Carolina is not on a major fault line, experts say earthquakes are not uncommon in the area.

The seventh earthquake in just two weeks was recorded in the Canton region

The seventh earthquake prompted North Carolina’s insurance commissioner, Mike Causey, to urge state residents to make sure they’re covered from natural disasters. Causey said earthquake damage is not usually covered by most standard homeowners insurance policies. But, homeowners can talk with insurance agents and add earthquake endorsements to their policies.
