A 3.1-magnitude earthquake hits Abyan, on the outskirts of southwestern Sydney

A small earthquake hit Abyan, 75 km southwest of Sydney.

The 3.1-magnitude quake occurred north of Douglas Park at 2.05 pm Sunday, about 3 kilometers below the Earth’s crust.

Hadi Ghasmi, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia, described the event as a shallow one.

“We generally consider it a small earthquake,” Ghasemi said.

“For people close to the epicenter, it would have felt like a short, sharp movement followed by a few more…which passes very quickly.”

He said it was unlikely that the event caused any damage to buildings or other structures.

In comments on Facebook, local residents reported feeling their homes shake and shake.

To date, no sequels have been recorded.

Ghasemi said that at least 48 similar earthquakes occurred within a radius of 100 kilometers from the epicenter during the past 10 years.

“All the events that we recorded, they were all small and superficial,” he said.
