4.3-magnitude quake hits Colorado, increases 277 percent so far in 2023

Two earthquakes hit southern Colorado Monday morning, just five minutes apart.

The first quake occurred near the small town of El Morro at around 8:13 a.m. and had a magnitude of 3.8. The second quake occurred near El Moro, but closer to the town of Hoehne at 8:18 a.m. This second quake was stronger, with a magnitude of 4.3.

The second magnitude 4.3 quake tied the early March earthquake as the strongest Centennial earthquake of 2023.

Four earthquakes have occurred in Colorado this month, with 132 so far this year. This time last year, only 35 earthquakes were recorded in Colorado, with the strongest measuring 3.0. That’s a 277 percent year-over-year increase for this date range.

Almost all of Colorado’s recent 100-plus earthquakes have occurred near the state’s southern border, with Trinidad being the closest major city.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 are generally felt by those who live in the area, but rarely cause damage. An estimated 500,000 earthquakes of this magnitude occur worldwide each year.

According to EarthquakeTrack.com, the largest earthquake to occur in Colorado in recent decades was a magnitude 5.4 quake in the Garfield County town of Parachute in 1973. Another more recent quake rivals this strength, with a magnitude of 5.3 in the area. From Trinidad, southern Colorado in 2011.

To put that in perspective, many of the world’s strongest earthquakes have intensities higher than 8.0, and sometimes higher than 9.0. Compared to the infamous earthquakes in California, the strongest earthquake in the Golden State in the past 100 years has been with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale – one hit that threshold in 1952 and another in 1992.
