Overnight earthquake shakes Virginia

A relatively weak earthquake of magnitude 2.3 struck West Virginia during the night hours. Fortunately, the earthquake was too weak to result in any casualties or damage reports. The earthquake occurred at 1:32 am today from a depth of 14.2 km near New Castle, Virginia, near the West Virginia/Virginia state line.

Today’s earthquake hit north and east of a somewhat stronger earthquake that caused some damage last October. Just before 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 25, a mild earthquake shook southwestern Virginia near the North Carolina border. According to the USGS, the magnitude 2.6 event occurred at 5:25 a.m. at a depth of 2.8 km. Out of an abundance of caution, Independence Elementary and Grayson County schools are closed to survey any damage from the earthquake.

In 2020, after a magnitude 5.1 event hit the region in August, three local schools sustained damage from this earthquake. The Istiklal Primary School had the most damage at that time, and the structural engineers had to make sure that the October earthquake did not add more worries to the buildings in the area.

While no residents reported feeling or hearing today’s USGS earthquake, this was not the case with the October event. Residents of the area took to social media to describe the shaking sensation they felt along with a loud bang they heard. Some believe that an explosion struck the area rather than an earthquake initially.
