2.5 magnitude earthquake in Salt Lake County

At least 50 people reported feeling the tremor from a 2.5-magnitude earthquake that struck part of Salt Lake County on Wednesday. The epicenter was 2 miles east-northeast of Magna and was recorded at a depth of 10.6 kilometers. This was reported by the University of Utah seismograph stations and the US Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at 11:50 a.m., and the epicenter was four miles from West Valley City and less than 10 miles from Salt Lake City. Wednesday’s quake was an aftershock of a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck Magna in 2020, said Katherine Weeden, a research scientist at seismographs at the University of Utah.

Magna’s drug bust recovers large amounts of fentanyl

This month in a Magna drug bust, authorities seized large quantities of illegal drugs, including fentanyl, heroin and cocaine, according to the Utah District Attorney’s Office. On Wednesday, two foreign residents of Magna were charged with possession and distribution of narcotic substances as a result of a drug arrest.

According to court documents, the two accused are Lenin Rafael Rodríguez Villafranca, 23, of Magna, and Onesi Pasilo Avilez Flores, 22, of Magna. In May of 2023, the FBI’s Wasatch Metro Narcotics Task Force begins an investigation of Rodriguez Villafranca and other members of the drug trafficking organization.

Reports say that while officials executed a search warrant for the Villafranca residence on June 6, agents found Avilez Flores with drugs consistent with blue fentanyl pills. The agents found about 6,288 grams of fentanyl, about 2,737 grams of heroin, and about 1,096 grams of cocaine.

A cafe in western Jordan is doing its part to help dogs in need of a forever home as shelters reach capacity. Rachelle Coburn recently opened Pup Cups Coffee, to spotlight dogs in need of forever homes.

Coburn said they run RoundUp fundraisers to help support animal rescues, donating a portion of their profits to the rescues themselves and hosting adoption events. Host adoption events are held by local rescues on the store’s backyard.
