Bassey, Byrd, Alvarson, Dynamo power past the Earthquakes 4-1

HOUSTON (AP) – Amine Bassey and Corey Bird scored with two goals in the first five minutes of the game, Thorlefur Alvarsson scored twice off the bench in the second period after a long weather delay, and the Houston Dynamo cruised to victory, 4-1. Over the San Jose Earthquakes Wednesday night.

Bassi scored his eighth goal of the season when he scored without help in the third minute to give Dynamo the lead (8-7-3). Bassi and Nelson Quinones provided assists as Bird scored his third goal of the season to take a 2-0 lead.

The Earthquakes (7-6-6) reduced the lead in the half with a break when defender Carlos Acapo received a pass from Christian Espinosa in the 41st minute and scored for the second time this season.

Houston put the game out of reach after thunderstorms stopped playing in the 62nd minute with two goals for Alvarson in the 77th and 89th minutes. Hector Herrera and Bassi helped score Alvarson’s second goal this season and Herrera and Franco Escobar made his third goal.

Steve Clark didn’t have to save Houston’s seventh clean sheet of the season. Daniel de Souza Brito saves San Jose.

Houston equaled a club record with a seventh straight home win over San Jose, which the Dynamo accomplished from 2009-14 against D.C. United. The Dynamo, who were coming off consecutive game shutouts against defending champions Los Angeles FC, won three straight shutouts for the first time since 2020. The club failed to record three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2012.

The Earthquakes entered play with a 2-0-3 record in their last five games, allowing just two goals.

San Jose returns home to host St. Louis City on Saturday. Houston travels to play Austin FC on Saturday.
