More early detection resources for earthquakes and tsunamis in Bali are needed to protect tourists

As a small island province, Bali is prone to natural disasters. Home to not one but two active volcanoes that are regularly affected by seismic activity, natural disaster management is of paramount importance on the Isle of the Gods.
Speaking to reporters, the chief executive of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Rinten, called on authorities to issue more funding and resource support for disaster management on the island.
Rentin says more early warning systems are needed in the communities around Mount Agung, and more shelters and tsunami warning systems need to be put in place around the island’s coast.
Rinten said, “We still need to improve the early warning system that we already have. Bali has an area of 0.26% of the total area of Indonesia. Ideally, 41 tsunami sirens should be installed.” To date, he acknowledges, there are only nine siren spots in Bali.

“We now only have nine, so we are moving to meet the criteria,” he added. Tsunami siren points are located in Sanur, Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua, Kota, Tabanan and Siret.
This means that there are no early warning systems or sirens in Bali’s top tourist destinations such as Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, and Uluwatu. While Kouta’s siren call certainly carries over, Rinten’s request for more support is significant.
Rinten confirmed that the regional disaster management agency has worked with disaster relief agencies in the district and the village to finalize a digital disaster information system, which includes early warning systems for both tsunamis and the island’s most active volcano, Mount Agung.

Regarding early warning systems for Mount Agung, Rintin said: “We have only eight early warning points for the eruption of Mount Api Agung. Of course, it is still far from being sufficient.”
Part of the reason Governor Koster recently banned all hiking in the mountains of Bali is due to the spiritual belief that if the land is not respected, spirits will issue their warnings to the island through a natural disaster such as a volcano eruption, earthquake, or tsunami.
According to Rintin, support for developing more early warning systems and better preparedness for disaster management in Bali must come from a variety of sources.
He said he calls on the central government, the National Meteorological and Climate Agency and the Ministry of Public Works to take a collaborative approach to implement more early warning systems across Bali.

Rentin is also exploring the possibility of inviting large companies in Bali to consider supporting preparedness for disaster management through corporate social responsibility programmes.
Rinten’s calls for more support to ensure public safety in natural disasters in Bali come just days after Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economies formally signed an agreement on the Tourist Protection Act with the United Nations.
The document outlines the commitment to ensure the safety of tourists in Indonesia in line with standards set by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
Minster Ono told reporters during the signing in Cambodia late last week that the agreement will help keep tourists safe and protect Indonesia’s culture and traditions.
Minister Ono said, “[these] The rules are mutual. Apart from receiving protection, [tourist] It must also comply with the agreement to respect local customs, culture and wisdom.”
He added, “This statement of compliance is our shared commitment to providing security and safety for tourists and ensuring the integrity of our customs and traditions.
The International Code for the Protection of Tourists was developed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
It has been designed “to provide all stakeholders in tourism, in both the public and private sectors, with practical guidance on how to assist tourists affected by emergencies, including but not limited to health emergencies, and to assist in the development and coordination of consumer protection standards through more A transparent and efficient framework.
The Indonesian Tourism Board recently released an infographic sharing its top tips with tourists on how to stay “smart” during their trip to Bali. Read all about it here.
