Staffordshire residents reported “rumbling” of windows and doors as the area was hit by a magnitude 3.3 earthquake on Wednesday.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the quake at 8.21pm.

It is the 21st largest earthquake to hit the UK in the past two months, comfortably beating two 1.8-magnitude tremors felt on the Isle of Mull in May.

However, it falls somewhat short of the UK’s largest earthquake, which the BGS recorded as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in the North Sea, 75 miles northeast of Great Yarmouth, on June 7, 1931.

Where did the earthquake hit?

The epicenter was 7.3 kilometers (4.5 miles) below the village of Tian, ​​10 miles southeast of Stoke-on-Trent.

A BGS spokesperson said they had received reports from across Staffordshire, mainly from within 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) of the epicenter.

The earthquake was reportedly felt in Derbyshire and as far north as Sheffield.

Dr Ian Stimpson, senior lecturer in geophysics at Keele University, told BBC News the area has not historically been prone to earthquakes.

“With this location and depth, it was likely a natural earthquake and not anything to do with previous mines,” he said.

BGS says it detects and identifies between 200 and 300 earthquakes in the UK each year.

Mark Page, 30, said he was at his home in Uttoxter when he felt a “very big shake”.

He said he checked “around the house to see if I could see anything” and “after noticing there were no signs of damage, I concluded that it was most likely a small earthquake.”

Tom, 38, in Cheadle, Staffordshire, said: “I was sitting watching an episode of Only Connect with my Wife on YouTube and when we opened another bottle of wine the whole house shook.

“I thought one of the kids had fallen out of bed or something else had happened.”

Carol Heather, from Helderston, told BBC News she felt such a loud impact and noise that she thought it was a bomb.

“My hair stood on end, it shook me off my seat. I was just watching a movie and it was really scary and terrifying,” she said.
