A 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit regional Victoria as residents 170km away in Melbourne also reported a tremor

Victoria was hit by a magnitude 4.6 earthquake overnight – the state’s 16th this year.

Geoscience Australia recorded the tremors at a depth of seven kilometers near Rawson, northeast of Melbourne, around 1.30am on Friday.

Seismologists reported that the shaking was moderate with very little damage, ranking on the lower end of their intensity scale.

More than 7,400 people told Geoscience Australia they felt the quake, with residents in Melbourne and even the New South Wales border reporting quakes.

The Bureau of Meteorology has assured Victorians that there is no danger of a tsunami.

It comes nearly three weeks after people felt a 2.7-magnitude earthquake with a depth of six kilometers in Foster, southeast of Melbourne.

Victorians took to social media waking up with shaking while others were shocked to feel their second earthquake in just a month.

“Woke up at 1.30am thinking someone was shaking my bed, it was actually another earthquake in Melbourne,” one user wrote.

“1:30am the bed shook, windows rattled, things moved on the TV stand, I thought it was a big landing gear I live next door to Melbourne airport it’s normal.. I was wrong it was another *** 4.6 earthquake in Rawson”, said another.

“Another Melbourne earthquake? I was on the stairs, oh my god, did they shake!” A third added.
