Early morning earthquake strikes regional Victoria

The small Victorian town of Rawson was hit by a magnitude 4.6 earthquake in the early hours of the morning.

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook the population in regional Victoria, where the tremor was felt early in the morning by thousands of people.

The Australian Geological Sciences said the quake occurred at 1.32am on Friday near Rawson, a small town 150km east of Melbourne.

More than 9,000 people reported feeling the quake by 8:30 am, including many residents in the eastern suburbs of the Victorian capital.

A spokeswoman for the Victorian SES told the AAP Friday morning that there were no reports of injuries or property damage.

The quake follows a series of recent earthquakes that have hit the region over the past month, including a 4.0-magnitude quake in late May.

Jonathan Bathgate, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia, said the quake was the latest in a series of aftershocks from a 2021 magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck the town of Mansfield.

“This is part of the aftershock sequence and there could be others to follow,” he told Seven’s Sunrise.

Elodie Borliss of the Center for Seismological Research said the increase in tremors across the state is normal.

“No harm has been reported yet, people are just reporting feeling it and hearing it,” she told ABC television.

“That’s very normal; yes, we’ve seen an increase in the last couple of years of people actually feeling them, but the actual background seismicity hasn’t changed at all.”

A magnitude 2.4 earthquake was reported on the Mornington Peninsula on June 3 and the days before, residents of Sunbury reported a magnitude 3.8 earthquake on May 29.

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit Melbourne on 28 May and a 2.3-magnitude earthquake with a depth of about 4 km was felt in Ferntree Gully on 16 May.
