‘Shaking shaking’ tourist hotspots as the Mag 4 earthquake felt throughout the island

TENERIFE was “rocked and shaken” by a 4-magnitude earthquake felt by tourists on the island.

Tremors were recorded from Puerto de la Cruz in the north to popular resorts in Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas in the south.

The earthquake hit deep sea last night

The earthquake was recorded at sea off the coast of Buenavista del Norte at 8.53 pm yesterday and was discovered on the nearby island of La Gomera.

Experts said that its depth was about 20 miles.

“I was attending dinner at home when the kitchen table rocked for a few seconds,” Raquel Gonzalez, deputy mayor of the nearby town of Los Silos, told the Spanish newspaper Aldea.

It is one of the largest recorded earthquakes in Tenerife’s history since seismic records became available in 1964 when the National Geographic Institute (IGN) established the first station on the island.

Earthquake experts have confirmed that there is no cause for concern and Tenerife remains a very safe place to visit.

Emergency services said there were no reports of injuries.

They tweeted: “The @ 112canarias is receiving invitations for a seismic movement felt in the municipalities of Arona, Granadilla, Los Silos, Buenavista, Santiago del Ted, Los Realjos and Puerto de la Cruz # Tenerife.

No personal or material damage has been reported.

“People in Tenerife also took to social networks to report kitchen furniture shaking, windows shaking, cups crashing to the floor, and” homes moving for about two seconds.

Seismological reports were also available, including Discovery Volcano, which confirmed that the earthquake had a magnitude of four at 8.53 pm.

The British posted messages, including: “It took about three seconds, just before the start of the local fireworks show. We shook the sofa and clatter bottles. Our neighbors felt the same.”
