It is estimated that a fifth of all Christians in Türkiye died in the February earthquake

TURKEY (MNN) — Turkey’s small Christian population knew it had lost many believers in the earthquake. After all, more than 45,000 people perished across southern Turkey when the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck in early February. But the devastation of Turkey’s already small Christian population is worse than many imagine.

Bruce Allen with FMI recently visited the Christians they work with in Turkey. He shares, “In the past, we’ve said that out of an estimated 85 million people, it has been estimated that there may have been 10,000 evangelical Christians in the country.

“Now, I’m told that number is probably only 8,000, probably because of how many Christians died in the earthquake because the worst affected province – Hatay Province – was a nucleus of Christian activity.”

This means that nearly a fifth of Turkey’s Christian population was killed in the February earthquake.

In fact, it is one of the major cities in Antakya [modern day Antioch] I just got you. This was where the followers of Christ in the first century were Christians first. There was a vibrant community still in Antakya until the earthquakes, so many Christians also died in the earthquakes.”

In their grief, the Church in Turkey still supports each other – and reaches out to their Muslim neighbors.

Allen says, “People from Muslim backgrounds hear about Jesus Christ for the first time and believe in Him!”

There is already a new church in Hatay province that now has about 15 people – and it’s growing with new believers!

Meanwhile, Turkish Christians travel with FMI from all over the country to earthquake-stricken areas with help.

“There is no hotel they can stay in, so they sleep in their car all week. There is no restaurant they can go to to eat, so they eat the same food that they share with the earthquake survivors. So they really live in the same environment as the survivors, and they do willingly and frequently,” Allen says.

“I think this is just such a great testament to the love of Christ that compels them to serve others.”

Churches across southern Türkiye have lost pastors, elders, teachers, missionaries and their loved ones. It serves as a call to the next generation of Christians as well as new believers to take leadership in the Turkish Church for the Gospel.

Pray that this will lead to the growth of the Turkish Church as they share Christ in harm’s way. Ask God to be the God of all consolation for the grieving believers.
