Victoria earthquake: A 2.4-magnitude earthquake hits the southeast of the country

The magnitude 2.4 quake was recorded just after 1am in Pakenham, 53 kilometers southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, 10 kilometers by three kilometres.

No injuries or damage were reported, and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The tremor was felt by more than 70 people, according to Australian Geosciences.

This comes days after a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck 127 km east of Melbourne near Rawson at about 1:32 am.

The fact that Australia is not on the “Ring of Fire”, a seismically active arc along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, does not make it immune to earthquakes.

Professor Phil Cummins, chief seismologist at Geoscience Australia, told 9news.com.au last month that forces at plate boundaries create stresses.

“These are transmitted through the plate, into the plate, and even though these stresses are very small, they slowly build up,” he said.

“Eventually the friction force of the faults in the Earth’s crust will exceed and these faults will occur and earthquakes will occur – even though they are not close to plate boundaries.”

Plate boundaries lie near New Zealand and Papua New Guinea and extend as far as India.
