A 4.8-magnitude earthquake this morning originated in Vajradalsville

People felt an earthquake in the capital region at 7.31 am today. I felt comfortable in Hádegismóar in Reykjavík, where mbl.is and Morgunblaðið are, and in Seltjarnarnes.

At least five earthquakes larger than 3 have been reported in Reykjanes since 6 am today.

Early measurements indicate the quake was of magnitude 4.3 and originated in Fagradalsfjall, according to a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Met Office.

The Met Office has no way of reviewing the earthquakes measured in Reykance in the past 24 hours, so these are preliminary results.

Another earthquake was equally felt in the capital at 7:4 am and another earthquake that looked very strong at 8:23 am and now it is reported as a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale.

A swarm of earthquakes started yesterday

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Reykjanes Peninsula last night at 11 pm. The earthquake is the largest to hit the region last year. The earthquake was well felt by the people in the Reykjanes peninsula and the metropolitan area.

It is part of an ongoing earthquake swarm at Mount Fagradalsfjall since 16am yesterday, with about 500 small quakes since then, most of them less than 2 in strength.

Seismic activity is expected to continue

Elisabet Palmadóttir, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, told mbl.is last night that seismic activity can be expected to continue overnight and even into the next few days. However, disturbances in the area were not measured.

Meanwhile, Palmadutir says the activity points to magma flowing under Fagradalsfjall, but in early April, he began measuring ground elevation in the area.

The possibility is that the region is waking up again

The region has not witnessed similar activity since the eruption of the volcano nearly a year ago. These conditions may clear up, but there’s a good chance the region will wake up again. It is difficult to know if it will end in a volcanic eruption.

Seismic activity is expected to continue in the coming days and people are advised not to travel in the area where rock falls are likely.

Earth’s rise at Fagradalsfjall began in early April and the activity is now thought to be caused by magma intruding at a depth of about 5 km.

Scientists from the Icelandic Met Office and the University of Iceland are holding a meeting with the Icelandic Met Office that started at 9 a.m. and are reviewing more data, it has been announced.
