Divers film extremely rare encounter with ‘earthquake fish’

A diver has filmed an extremely rare encounter with an “earthquake fish” off the coast of Taiwan.

The footage was taken by diving instructor Wang Zhengru near Ruifang District in New Taipei.

The earthquake fish is called the paddle fish but gets its nickname from the fact that it often lives in waters so deep that local legends and lore say it only rises from the depths before or after an earthquake.

It is very rare to see one in the wild due to its preference for waters ranging from about 650 feet to 3300 feet. Occasionally, it will make its way towards the surface, which is when sightings may occur.

“Many amazing animals can be found off the northeastern coast of Taiwan, and the underwater scenery is very beautiful, but it was my first encounter with a giant paddlefish,” Wang, who has been diving for 15 years, told Newsweek.

The footage shows the paddlefish, which appears to have been injured, floating in the clear blue water. In fact, a large hole could be seen in the middle of its body.

“The wounds inflicted on the giant paddlefish may be the result of the shark’s overcooked [or cigar shark] Wang said.

Despite the legends, Wang does not believe that these paddlefish rose to the surface due to earthquake activity.

“She must have been dying so she swam in the shallow water,” he said.

It’s not clear how big this paddlefish is, but it can reach up to 26 feet in length. There have been unofficial reports of much larger paddlefish, although there have been unconfirmed sightings of about 50 feet in length.

Because of their unusual appearance and large size, they are likely the source of many sea monster legends.

Most encounters with unusual fish occur when they are washed ashore on beaches or caught as bycatch and are rarely observed swimming in the deeper waters of their natural habitat.

In July 2022, a paddlefish was caught from the ocean off the coast of Chile, with footage showing the 20-foot-long creature being removed from the water.

When she was captured, many believed her to be a harbinger of a coming disaster but the fears proved unfounded.
