Changes in thermal and seismic activity

Yellowstone National Park – On July 3, Yellowstone National Park (YNP) shared a monthly update with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory on the hydrothermal system and seismic activity.

According to Yellowstone Volcano Observatory scientist in charge Mike Poland, there have been noticeable changes in thermal activity in the area near Old Faithful on Geyser Hill.

Starting May 24, Aurum Geyser began making its first appearance in two years, with frequent eruptions over the ensuing weeks. Beehive Geysir, which is known to erupt once a day, has also begun to appear more frequently.

Poland also confirms that there are a number of new features near the Geyser Hill pass that have closed part of the walking path due to hot water splashing and natural debris dumping. A dormant feature that formed in 2018 also became active near the boardwalk on May 30.

While activity has subsided since early June, Poland says the question is what drove this change in activity.

“It’s tempting to think it’s magma, isn’t it?” Poland says. “Sorry, that’s not the case. If that’s true, we’d expect to see changes across the basin, not just in one small local area in Geyser Hill.”

Poland credits the changes to the dynamic nature of the YNP’s hydrothermal system, which he compares to plumbing in an old house that always showed various leaks.

In addition, the Steamboat Geyser volcano, the tallest in the world, had a major eruption on June 9. This was the fifth major eruption of the Steamboat volcano in 2023, but Poland says there is currently no indication of any slight activity in the geyser that would indicate another major eruption is on its way.

The park also recorded fewer earthquakes in June than in previous years. The month recorded 78 earthquakes, which Poland says are slightly below average. The largest magnitude of 2.8 was recorded on June 17 and was just south of the park boundary.
