A 4.5-magnitude earthquake was measured 3.2 km northeast of Elde at 5.06 am this morning, the Met Office website reports.

In all, 21 earthquakes were reported, with more than 3 tremors on the Richter scale since 3 a.m. and most of them occurred on the Reykjanes Ridge near Elde.

Earlier, three large earthquakes hit Elde on Reykance Ridge around midnight yesterday.

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale occurred for the first time at 23:29 in the morning 3.3 km northeast of Elde.

Then, two major earthquakes struck Elde in the middle of the night, the first with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale and the second with a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale.

The Met Office received reports that the earthquake was felt in the capital region and in Akranes.

There is no magma anywhere other than Fagradalsfjall

According to a natural hazard expert with the Icelandic Met Office, there is no evidence of magma intrusion anywhere other than in the Fagradalsfjall area.

“There is a lot going on right now and what is happening in Fagradalsfjall affects the entire Reykjanes peninsula. But all eyes are on the area between Fagradalsfjall and Keeler.”

According to the preliminary preliminary results released by the Met Office, at least five earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 to 3.8 have struck Elde since midnight.
