The minister announces granting loans to earthquake victims

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Mehmet Ozaski announced that grants and interest-free loans will be provided to citizens affected by the recent earthquakes that hit Kahramanmaraş.

The assistance will be provided as part of the “Site Transformation Project” and aims to support those who choose to rebuild their structures on site, the minister said at the state-owned İlbank facilities in Ankara on July 7.

According to Ozhaski, individuals who suffered losses in earthquakes will be eligible for a grant of 500 thousand TL for housing and 250 thousand liras for workplaces. In addition, they will have the opportunity to obtain interest-free loans ranging from 500,000 to 800,000 lira for housing, and between 250,000 and 500,000 lira for workplaces. These loans will have a maturity of 10 years with a grace period of 2 years.

The minister highlighted the extent of the damage caused by the earthquakes, explaining that about 680,000 homes and 170,000 independent units – including warehouses, workplaces and stores – were destroyed or are still in the process of being demolished.

The minister affirmed that to meet the housing needs of the affected population, construction has been started in reserve residential areas, away from earthquake-prone areas, adding that new housing will be ready for occupancy as of October, with the completion of 319,000 homes. Homes within a year, to be delivered by February.

Ozaski also outlined four non-negotiable principles. The minister emphasized that construction in cases of fractures would not be allowed, in line with the recommended 60-meter-wide building ban proposed by the scholars. In addition, areas prone to liquefaction would be strictly off-limits to construction, while construction of buildings on riverbeds would result in punitive penalties. Finally, there will be zero tolerance for any architectural and engineering services that do not meet applicable standards.
