JAKARTA (Xinhua) — Three people were killed and some roads were blocked in landslides in Lumagang district in Indonesia’s East Java province on Friday evening.

Patria Doi Hastiadi, head of the Lumajang Disaster Management Agency, said the three victims, who belonged to a family, were found buried in the kitchen or bedroom of their home.

Heavy rains caused landslides at some points, blocking access to roads.

Authorities deployed excavators to reopen blocked roads, but the emergency response had to be paused due to subsequent landslides.

Meanwhile, the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck off eastern Indonesia’s Maluku province earlier on Friday (July 7).

The agency had earlier issued the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 before it was adjusted.

The agency said the quake occurred at 12:13 am local time (1713 GMT) and its epicenter was 207 km northwest of the Tanimbar Islands and 131 km below the sea floor.

She added that earthquakes are not likely to cause giant waves.
