Only two earthquakes have been reported across the North Carolina border in neighboring states

Asheville, North Carolina (WLOS) – People who live in areas of western North Carolina may have felt some shaking Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The USGS reported two small earthquakes across state lines in Tennessee and Virginia.

The first occurred around 6:48 p.m. Friday in eastern Tennessee, about 18 miles from Sevierville. The US Geological Survey reported that this earthquake had a magnitude of 2.2 at a depth of 4.8 kilometers. As of 11 a.m. Saturday, the USGS “Felt Report” had not received any responses.

The second earthquake occurred at about 9:09 a.m. Saturday in southwest Virginia, about 2 miles from Healesville, Virginia, and about 17 miles from Mount Airy, North Carolina. The USGS reported that this was a magnitude 2.6 earthquake at a depth of 3.9 kilometers. As of 11 a.m. Saturday, the USGS’ “Felt Report” has recorded 21 responses.

Western North Carolina has experienced several earthquakes in the past few months, particularly near the Canton area.

From late May to mid-June, no fewer than eight earthquakes were recorded near the area.
