The Israelis will update the earthquake warning systems in Canada

Canada’s Department of Natural Resources has provided funding to Tel Aviv University (TAU) to develop a program aimed at improving Canada’s Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) systems, Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced June 27.

“We are delighted to bring the world-leading expertise of Tel Aviv University to Canada, helping us access the earliest and most accurate alerts of earthquakes and tsunamis,” Wilkinson said.

TAU, he said, “is the world leader in small-aperture seismic arrays that can improve EEW performance for transnational and offshore events and is a responsible choice for the safety of Canadians.”

There are approximately 5,000 earthquakes across Canada each year.

Canadian EEW systems were originally developed by TAU in collaboration with Israeli high-tech company SeismicAI, which has an exclusive license to the technology and has been successfully deployed and tested around the world.

This new project aims to enhance the performance of EEW systems in coastal and frontier regions where it is difficult to deploy conventional EEW sensor station networks. These areas may face high seismic hazards, which requires dedicated approaches for effective early warning.

An improved EEW system should provide more comprehensive coverage and earlier alerts, allowing people in high-risk areas more time to take proactive measures, such as “drop, cover and wait” before an earthquake hits.

“Of all the earthquake mitigation measures that could be considered for Canada, the array-based early warning of earthquakes is the most practical and the most cost-effective. I really believe that creating such a system is an important step towards building Earthquake-resistant communities in Canada.

Starting in 2024, people in high-risk areas of Canada will be able to receive an emergency notification or alert that an earthquake has occurred and that they should take immediate steps to protect themselves and minimize damage to property.
